Wild and Exotic sample itinerary for the Horizon Horseback Safari
This safari is for the luxury lovers and those who want guaranteed superb game viewing. This 20,000 acre property was one of the first to re-introduce game into the Waterberg starting in 1976 and now offers unsurpassed game viewing in South Africa. The reserve contains literally thousands of animals. Species to be seen include not only rhino, hippo, buffalo, giraffe, leopard, ostrich and two species of zebra, but also over 20 species of antelope, including the impressive eland and sable and the exquisite steenbok and springbok.
This reserve is unique in the Waterberg in that the reserve is situated at the base of the Waterberg escarpment. Although it's views are mountainous it's environment consists mainly of fertile plains. This gives the riders the opportunity to view the larger herds of game than would normally occur in Southern Africa's bushveld areas. It is not uncommon to see herds of a few hundred antelope, together with 8 or 9 rhino, all in the same small area. In some situations one could take a photo with rhino, kudu, blesbok, impala and springbok all in the same frame. It provides a truly magical game experience.
Day 1: After arrival at Oliver Tambo International airport, Johannesburg, a three hour group transfer to the safari will depart at 10.00 am. The stone and thatch safari lodge overlooks a large lake with resident hippo, and has stunning views of the surrounding plains, and Waterberg escarpment.
All rooms are en suite and the three double rooms open out onto private verandahs overlooking the lake. The lodge is closely situated to the stables and yards and has a small pool for cooling off after a long morning ride. That afternoon, become acquainted with the horses, take in the wonderful open spaces, and go in search of game in the soft afternoon light. This ride will provide the first taste of the incredible variety of game on the reserve. Return to the lodge for sundowner drinks overlooking the lake and a traditional African evening meal.
Day 2: Ride to ‘little Serengeti', a sweeping plainto encounter the dense game populations for which this beautiful reserve is renowned. Experience that dream canter alongside herds of antelope as they gallop and pronk across the open savannah. Back at the lodge guests can sunbathe above the hippo dam and watch these family orientated creatures interact and play in the heat of the day. That afternoon ride out with the explicit purpose of tracking the majestic white rhino. These prehistoric animals are one of the remarkable success stories of the reserve, which holds one of the oldest breeding herds in the country. Encountering these magnificent creatures is a highlight of any safari but riding closely alongside them is a truly unforgettable experience.
Day 3: Ride along the base of the mountain and follow a valley deep into the heart of the Waterberg escarpment. Look out for the colony of endangered cape vultures and some of the reserve's more elusive mountain species - leopard, mountain zebra, klipspringer and yellow spotted rock hyrax. The path follows crystal clear streams and passes several picturesque dams along the way. The bush is dense and full of birdcalls. Enjoy a picnic at one of the dams, returning to the lodge in time for afternoon tea. Later relax at the lodge or join the guides on an afternoon bush walk.
Day 4: Canter towards the reserve's western boundary for unending views of the ‘seven sisters' of the Waterberg escarpment in the background. Long and winding tracks offer the perfect opportunity for fast and exhilarating riding. A game drive in the afternoon offers the opportunity to get up close and personal with Cape buffalo and the magnificant rare sable antelope. Whilst driving back after dark, glimpse nocturnal animals such as brown hyena, spring hare, porcupine and aardvark. That night relax around the fire, enjoy the magical African night sky, and a variable feast whilst recounting the day's adventures.
Day 5: In the morning use this last chance to find any species not yet encountered and take one last gallop along the endless sandy lanes. After a hearty brunch and sad goodbyes you will depart for the airport.

Guests can join in the daily routine of herding and yard work, check calving cows or drive a herd between widely spread pastures. The Bonsmara is a non-aggressive breed and the ideal animal with which to experience the challenge and excitement of mustering cattle. Herding cattle also stimulates one to work closely with the horse and gives a rewarding purpose to a morning ride.
Polocrosse: An amalgam of polo and lacrosse, polocrosse is easy to learn and one of the most exhilarating sports on horseback. To guests who have never played before we introduce the game slowly, running through the basic rules and showing the tricks of the trade when it comes to stick work. Then it is- "in at the deep end" - with a full game. One chukka is usually all it takes to bring out the competitive spirit!
Cross-Country Jumping: For experienced riders, our challenging cross-country course ranges from welcome level log piles to over 30 taxing open jumps. Triple ‘B' Ranch hosts an annual international 3-phase event affiliated to the Transvaal Horse Society. The course was designed by South Africa's top course builder, Johnny Perreira.
Western Games: Those interested in yet another challenge can join in the fun of western games. Barrel racing and pole bending are fun ways of schooling yourself in the art of light commands and quick responses.
Riding amongst game: Triple B Ranch offers four horseback game viewing options for those wanting to experience the African Safari. Viewing game on horseback is an enriching experience as the animals seem to have no fear, enabling you to get closer than you ever thought possible. Using the knowledge of local guides, you will explore game tracks, follow spoor and learn local bush lore.

On these trips meals are served from the campfire and accommodation is in thatch huts, each with en-suite facilities and sleeping up to three people. The born wild trip would normally be incorporated into all eight-day bookings.
Bush walks and tour of Triple B Ranch: When out of the saddle, why not take the opportunity to enjoy a guided bush walk or a tour of Triple B, with the owner and great character, Charles Baber. Guests are also encouraged to meet locals from the nearby village and to visit their children at the farm crèche and school. The children love to see foreign faces and they may even sing for you!
