Muscoates Cottage

With panoramic views to the North Yorkshire Moors, this two bedroom property with wooden beamed ceilings is set in a tranquil location at the end of a long drive. Recently renovated to the highest standard, the accommodation includes a spacious stone flagged living and dining area, complete with underfloor heating throughout. Muscoates is steeped in local history, and is the setting for Herbert Read’s acclaimed autobiography An Innocent Eye, which vividly describes rural childhood at a time when this property was a self-sufficient working farm. The theme of self-sufficiency is maintained today, and guests may purchase a range of organic produce raised and grown on the property according to season. This includes delicious cuts of pork from our home raised Gloucester Old Spot pigs, which are fattened on windfall apples in the property’s traditional orchard, and a wide variety of local game.

Muscoates Cottage offers the perfect base to discover the delights of unspoilt Ryedale and the North Yorkshire Moors with her purple heather hills in summer, and dozens of secluded dales waiting to be explored. These include Farndale (famous for rafts of yellow daffodils that carpet the dale in spring), Fryup Dale, Glaisdale and Rosedale. The celebrated Star Inn and delicatessen at Harome, and Castle Howard are both within ten minutes drive of the property, and a stunning coastline divided by sandy beaches at Sandsend and Whitby lies at the end of forty minutes drive through moors and dales. The area also presents superb opportunities for trout fishing, riding and other field sports, all of which can be arranged through Wild and Exotic. These include driven and walked up pheasant, grouse and partridge shooting, roe stalking and duck flighting.
